Typical projects that need Building permits are:  New Construction, Renovations, Remodeling, Additions, Re-roofing, New Siding, New Windows and Doors and any alterations that involve structural work.

Electrical permits are needed for any work involving the wiring of any project. This includes low voltage work, such as; Alarm systems, Site lighting, and other low voltage uses.

Plumbing permits are needed for any plumbing changes made to existing systems and any new work.

Please check with the Department before starting any work. Questions dealing with Zoning can be answered at the same department. Building, Plumbing, and Electrical Permits are required when working on existing structures or when constructing new structures. The Building Code, 780 CMR, requires licenses from builders, remodelers, electricians, plumbers, and other specialized disciplines, as well as insurance on all projects. There are some exemptions and you should call the Inspections department for information.
